2) September Celebration at Xatśūll Heritage Village - this Saturday

Xatśūll Heritage Village is hosting it's third cultural event of the 2013 season this Saturday, Sept 21/13 - you are invited to enjoy traditional cultural activities including: Story telling, traditional arts and crafts, guided tours, workshops and traditional local food. 11 am - doors open, arts & crafts tables, 12 pm - lunch, and 1 pm - performances, tours and workshops.

The village is located right on the Fraser River. From Williams Lake, head north on Hwy 97. After 35 km follow the signs and turn left off the highway. Admission by donation.

3) Staying Alive: Battle for Life Concert & Gathering - Sept 25th

The Williams Lake & Area Suicide and Sudden Death Committee is hosting their annual event in recognition of World Suicide Prevention Day.

The Staying Alive: Battle for Life Concert & Gathering will take place on September 25, from 2:30 to 6:30 pm. 

It begins at Boitano Park (Ringwood Theatre) with a Moment of Silence at the Memory Tree, in remembrance of the people who died by suicide.

We will walk from the park to Lake City Senior Secondary Carson Campus, where local youth will provide entertainment, interweaved with informative skits for suicide prevention.

4) From the Communities that Care table - Positive Action Program launch

Monday, September 23, is the launch of Positive Action for the 2013-2014 school year! 

Here’s some background information for those of you new to Positive Action:

a) It’s an evidence based program sponsored by Communities that Care,

b) Its universal philosophy is that you feel good about yourself when you do positive actions, ie. When you think positive thoughts, you do positive actions, and you feel good about yourself.  Positive Action lessons help children build these skills so that it becomes a way of thinking and doing, and

c) It’s fun, interactive, and easily incorporated into the classroom and other settings.

Next week, you will find the Positive Action Word of the Week in your inbox.  All the lessons during that week focus on this word and give children and youth a deeper understanding of what it means.

You can help promote Positive Action and the Word of Week by posting it in your schools, organizations, in public spaces, or using it to engage in dialogue.  When our children see us using it, it reinforces the positive lessons and actions they are learning.

5) Walk for Harmony - Tues Oct 8/13

Celebrate Multiculturalism by supporting the Walk for Harmony on Tuesday Oct 8/13. The event starts at the end of Western Avenue at the Coast Fraser Inn parking lot at 10:45 am with the unveiling of the Celebrating Diversity Mural Project. Then at 11:35 am join the walk to eliminate racism down Carson Drive to Boitanio Park for refreshments. 6) Williams Lake Employment Services Job Fair

Williams Lake Job Fair 2013 - Oct 9 & 10th at the Gibralter Room at the Recreation Complex from 10 am - 3 pm - Everyone is Welcome!

This is an opportunity for you to meet potential employers, a chance to drop off resumes and research career goals. Featuring employer exhibit booths, guest speakers, and lots of prizes to give away. Lots to learn and experience.

7) Volunteer Needed - English Tutor

English Language Services for Adults (Immigrant and Multicultural Services Society) needs a volunteer to work with a student who is unable to attend class. On Wednesdays and Thursdays, this student will stay at IMSS after class ends at 11:30 and work on class work he missed on Monday and Tuesday. He needs a volunteer to make sure he understands the exercises, give him feedback on his work, and to encourage him to engage in conversation.

8) Cariboo Regional District Library Events

a) Author Event: Samuel Blondahl, Wednesday September  25, 7pm - Library Programme Room

We are pleased to present Cariboo author and artist Samuel Blondahl. Mr. Blondahl resides in the South Cariboo and spent his formative years in the 100 Mile House Area. Samuel attended the Vancouver Institute of Media Arts, graduating in 2009 with a diploma in Game Art and Design. Examples of his art can be found on his website www.blondahl.ca. We invite you to meet Mr. Blondahl and enjoy a very interesting presentation featuring his art and writing. Mr. Blondahl’s recently published books include Mercury and Mercury: War, the first two books of his compelling science fiction series, The Anahita Chronicles.

b) Red Cedar Book Club - starts in October. Every other Thursday. 3:30-4:30pm.

c) National Film Board Screening*: The People of the Kattawapiskak River

Thursday, October 10, 7 p.m. –  Williams Lake Longhouse

Directed by Alanis Obomsawin

Alanis Obomsawin’s documentary The People of the Kattawapiskak River exposes the housing crisis faced by 1,700 Cree in Northern Ontario, a situation that led Attawapiskat’s band chief, Theresa Spence, to ask the Canadian Red Cross for help. With the Idle No More movement making front page headlines, this film provides background and context for one aspect of the growing crisis.

Saturday, September 28, from 2pm to 4pm, Thompson Rivers University and Welcoming Communities Williams Lake plan to fill the gym at TRU for the Cariboo Welcome Fair, a free, family-friendly event. Newcomers to the region will learn about services and organizations that can help them make connections in the community.

Local businesses and community organizations, as well as health, education, and government organizations, are invited to book a table in order to present information and answer questions about the work they do in the community. Local arts and volunteer groups may wish to have sign-up sheets for future events and workshops.

There will be door prizes, food vendors, and a children’s activity area with music and story-telling. Most importantly, there will be local people on hand who live, work, and play in the community to share information, make suggestions, and offer practical help.

The Cariboo Welcome Fair is an opportunity for the community to get to know what is available to make everyone feel at home in the Cariboo. Table bookings and entry to the fair are free to all.

This event, and the work of the Immigrant and Multicultural Services Society in Williams Lake, is made possible by grants from the Government of Canada and the Province of British Columbia, through the Welcome BC program.

2) Cariboo Chilcotin Partners for Literacy (CCPL) is looking for seniors

The CCPL is looking for seniors who would like to learn about computers and who would like to share their stories. This project matches seniors with students for three to five sessions starting this month. The Fruit Hunters travels across culture, history and geography to show how intertwined we are with the fruits we eat. Our guides are devoted fruit fanatics such as movie star Bill Pullman, whose obsession leads him on a crusade to create a community orchard in the Hollywood.

Toddlers Too: Caregivers & Toddlers. Drop-in: Have fun reading, sharing and singing as we improve our literacy skills with special puppets and interactive activities to encourage our learning. Wednesdays, 10:30am-11:00am

Friday Story Fun Time. Parent stays to help out if child is under 3 years of age. Drop-in: Join us on Friday mornings for puppets, singing, silly songs, rhymes, interactive books, themed story days and a craft. Fridays, 10:30am-11:15am

4) Cariboo Chilcotin Metis Association’s AGM

The Cariboo Chilcotin Metis Association’s is holding it’s Annual General Meeting on Sept 18^th at 6pm at 171 Hickory Road in Wildwood.

5) SPCA’s Paws for a Cause Walk – Sept 15^th

The annual walk will start in Boitanio Park  with registration beginning at 9am and the first walk out at 10 am. Register online at spca.bc.ca

6) Terry Fox Run – Sept 15^th

On Sunday Sept 15 at 9 am, starting at the Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex is the annual Terry Fox Run. The 5 or 10 km route are suitable for bikes, rollerblades, wheelchairs, strollers and dogs on a leash are also welcome.

7) StrongStart Centres open again

Summer is over and StrongStart is beginning again for the school year. StrongStart Centres are school based early learning centres facilitated by an Early Childhood Educator. They are free, drop-in sessions for children up to the age of five and their parents &/or caregivers. StrongStart Centres are located at Cataline, Mountview, Marie Sharpe, Alexis Creek, 150 Mile and Horsefly schools. 9) United Way’s Kickoff Campaign Breakfast – Sept 20th

10) Memorial Complex Recreation Centre – fall leisure guide programs

The new Fall/Winter 2013/2014 Active Living Guide is now available at the Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex and/or at www.activewilliamslake.ca. 11) BC Hydro’s 2013 edition of our Community Champions program

BC Hydro is looking for non-profit organizations to submit video entries that tell us what they are doing to make their community more sustainable. Videos will be accepted until September 30th.

Up to 15 finalists will be selected for public voting between October 15 and November 15, and 5 winners will each receive $10,000 to continue their sustainability-based projects.

If you are aware of any non-profit groups in your community that may be interested in this program, please share this opportunity with them.

1) Orange Shirt Day – Sept 30/13

Orange Shirt Day will be on September 30^th in Williams Lake, and thoughout the Cariboo Regional District, in recognition of the harm the residential school system did to children's sense of self-esteem and wellbeing, and as an affirmation of the commitment to ensure that everyone around us matters.  “Every Child Matters” orange shirt buttons will be distributed throughout the month of September, with  a ceremony in Boitanio Park at 11 am. 

Other activities are still in the planning stages.  To get involved, the next planning meeting is August 29^th, in the CRD library meeting room. The planning committee includes representatives from CRD, municipalities, First Nations and SD27.

2) Central Cariboo Grant for Assistance Application – deadline Sept 30

On an annual bases, the City of Williams Lake and the CRD Electoral Areas D, E & F jointly provide Grants for Assistance to local non-profit organizations for projects, activities and events that strengthen and enhance the well being of the community, promote volunteerism and support the goals and priorities of the City of Williams Lake and the Cariboo Regional District.

3) Request for Expression of Interest: Integrated Network Support Model – Early Implementation Sites

From the Ministry of Social Development and Social Innovation Services to Adults with Developmental Disabilities (STADD)

The purpose of this Request for Expression of Interest (REOI) is to identify communities interested in becoming one of the five Early Implementation Sites (EIS) to implement, test and refine the Services to Adults with Developmental Disabilities (STADD) Integrated Support Network Model. This is an exciting opportunity to come together as a community to enhance support for individuals with developmental disabilities and their families and create a more inclusive community. This opportunity enables your community to proactively shape and contribute to integrated support.

4) Williams Lake Kidney Walk – Aug 25^th

The Kidney Foundation is hosting it’s annual Kidney Walk in Williams Lake on Sunday Aug 25^th. The walk raises funds for critical programs and services for British Columbians affected by Kidney disease. The walk also helps raise awareness about the seriousness of this disease and highlights the importance of organ donations. Thousands participate and volunteer each year. The event also features live entertainment, prizes, fundraising BBQ’s, silent auctions and more.

5) Central Cariboo Hospice Palliative Care Society’s AGM – Sept 4 at 6pm

c) Call for Submissions: Cariboo Mountain Bike Film Festival

In Partnership with the Williams Lake Community Arts Council and the Central Cariboo Arts and Culture Society, the Cariboo Mountain Bike Consortium will host the first amateur Cariboo Mountain Bike Film Festival this season. This festival will challenge all riders and artists alike to create the best short mountain bike film in the region.

The http://www.ridethecariboo.ca/film-festival web page will provide participants with the rules and guidelines for film festival entires. All entries must be submitted electronically through this web site no later than September 5th, 2013. Winning films will be selected for a Premier sceening on Friday Sept 15th.

d) Introduction to Non-Profit Management with Dr. Graham Kelsey

This free course is designed to introduce students to the areas of responsibility of managers of non-profit organizations; intended to provide a broad overview of the management challenges of the non-profit sector.

The course consists of ten modules:
1. Non-Profits: The Purveyors of Common Decency
2. Board Governance: The First Step in Non-Profit Management
3. Strategic Management for Non-Profits: Management for the Better
4. Financial Management in the Non-Profit Sector
5. Strategic Management of Human Resources: People are the Best Resource
6. Fundraising and Resource Development
7. Marketing and Public Relations: Putting your Best Foot Forward
8. Program Evaluation for the Non-Profit sector: Measuring up to the Challenge
9. Leading and Managing in the Non-Profit sector
10. Volunteer Management: Treating your Volunteers as a Valuable Resource

Text Materials - A package of reading materials for each module will be supplied in electronic format. Students are encouraged to seek out further material as their interests develop.

Learning and Teaching Methods - The course will use lectures, in-class discussion, case analyses and individual and team projects. It is expected that students will undertake regular individual preparation for each class.

1) Literacy Fun Day at Bell-E-Acres – Sunday Aug 11

From 10 am – 2 pm this Sunday the Cariboo Chilcotin Partners for Literacy (CCPL) is hosting a Family Fun day at Bell-E-Acres in Williams Lake. Events include par 3 golf, mini golf, putting & chipping contests, story tent, crafts, activities, face painting and bingo. There will be plenty of food and prizes to be awarded.

Everyone is welcome to attend and is encouraged to bring the whole family. This event is to promote literacy throughout our community.

2) Xats’ull Heritage Village August Celebration – Aug 11th

Xats’ull Heritage Village is hosting it’s annual August celebration this Sunday. Come to the village to celebrate in partnership with the Rivershed Society of BC. Everyone is invited to meet the team travelling the length of the Fraser River and to enjoy traditional cultural activities including story telling, arts and crafts, guided tours of the Village, workshops and traditional local food – pit cooking.

3) Boys & Girls Club’s Street Party – Aug 13^th from 5 – 9 pm

Enjoy free activities, free food and lots of fun for the whole family on Tuesday August 13^th starting at 5 pm. Enjoy the Bouncy Castle, remote control car course, graffiti wall, prizes,  face & nail painting, crafts, and a youth versus RCMP officers water fight! 4) Art Walk Tour begins – Aug 9^th

Art Walk organizers and artists will be celebrating the start of Art Walk by meeting at About Face Photography at 11:45 am. They will then be given a guided tour of the first 18 stops in the Art Walk by Mary Forbes. Everyone is welcome to join.

This year’s line-up for Performances in the Park summer concert series rocks!  Get your lawn chairs ready and prepare for a musical celebration for the whole family every Thursday night in Boitanio Park.

6) Fresh Air Film’s Outdoor Movie Night – Boitanio Park Aug 15

Epic is the next movie to be played for free outdoors in Boitanio Park on Aug 15^th starting at dusk (pre show activities start at 7pm). Bring a lawn chair or blanket and enjoy the show. Fresh Air films is brought to you by FORTIS BC.

7) Tsilhquot’in hosts Annual Gathering – Aug 20 – 21^st

The 23^rd annual Tsilhquot’in Nation Gathering is being held on Tuesday Aug 20 and Wednesday Aug 21^st at the Chilco Ranch in Hanceville, BC (south side of the Chilcotin Bridge). This is a family event open to everyone including non First Nations. This even attracts approximately 500 people showcasing Tsilhquot’in culture and traditions including entertainment and children’s activities over two days. 8) Call for Artists – Branding the City with Art

Artists and designers are invited to submit up to three entries for a juried competition for the design of banners. Up to four successful designs will be digitally printed on high-quality outdoor banners to be displayed across the City. There is a $150 prize and a flag of the print for each selected art piece. 9) Cops for Cancer BBQ – Friday Aug 16^th

At the Williams Lake & District Credit Union from 11 am – 2 pm. All proceeds from the BBQ go to Cops for Cancer Tour de North.

From 11 am – 2 pm on Sunday Aug 17^th the Cariboo Adventist Academy is holding a Car Wash & Hotdog sale in the parking lot of All About Hair Studio located at 68A N. Broadway to raise funds for playground equipment.

Williams Lake Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) are inviting anyone interested in signing up for this year’s 21^st annual Tour de Cariboo bike ride from Williams Lake to Gavin Lake. 12) Salvation Army Updates

a) You Are Invited -  In combination with Booth University College studies, The Salvation Army in Williams Lake  is holding a workshop designed to learn about Inspirational Leadership and what it looks like when put into practice.

The Salvation Army wants to discover and share as much as we can about Inspirational Leadership in our community, and what you expect or want to see from your leaders. We respect your experiences, your expertise and your opinions and want to take the time to learn more about them.   The finished report on the info gathered from this session and other like it throughout the province will be compiled and evaluated.    This document then can then be shared with all participants.

You are invited to join us on Monday August 19 ^th  9:00 AM – 3:00 PM in the Fellowship Hall at the Williams Lake Salvation Army  at 267 Borland street for a wonderful day of enlightenment and discovery.

13) Cariboo Chilcotin Early Years Conference at TRU on Oct 4 & 5^th

Early Years Conference. The conference is co-hosted by 100 Mile House CCRR & Williams Lake CCRR in partnership with Success by 6 and Children First. Our planning committee has worked very hard to ensure this will be an

educational and fun event.

Our goal for this conference is to inspire you, encourage you and support you in your journey as an Early Years Educator. We have put together an amazing program that will provide professional development opportunities for all who work with young

children and families.
