What is The Social Planning Council?

Activities:

o Monthly Meetings: Attend meetings with guest speakers from within the community &/or presentations at each meeting. We currently meet the fourth Monday of every month (excluding summer) at City Hall with light lunch by donation.

o Facebook & Email Group: Utilize the network on Facebook. Start discussions, learn about & share upcoming community events, projects and meetings. If you don’t use Facebook, then join the email network instead.

o Inform City Council: The SPC provides reports to City Council regularly and the City keeps the SPC informed. Use the network and have your voices heard.



Strategic Direction of the Social Planning Council of Williams Lake & Area:

o Poverty Reduction and the local Living Wage Campaign.

o Community Collaboration and Networking.

o Retention and Succession of residents within the Area.



Community Social Planning:

o Supports communities in building an integrated approach to complex problems that take into account social, economic, and environmental concerns.

o Maximizes the effectiveness of often scarce resources by working to reduce duplication, overlap and competition.

o Provides an ongoing forum for communication, coordination and conflict resolution.

Community Updates (13) – Aug 9, 2013

1) Literacy Fun Day at Bell-E-Acres – Sunday Aug 11
From 10 am – 2 pm this Sunday the Cariboo Chilcotin Partners for Literacy (CCPL) is hosting a Family Fun day at Bell-E-Acres in Williams Lake. Events include par 3 golf, mini golf, putting & chipping contests, story tent, crafts, activities, face painting and bingo. There will be plenty of food and prizes to be awarded.

Everyone is welcome to attend and is encouraged to bring the whole family. This event is to promote literacy throughout our community.

2) Xats’ull Heritage Village August Celebration – Aug 11th
Xats’ull Heritage Village is hosting it’s annual August celebration this Sunday. Come to the village to celebrate in partnership with the Rivershed Society of BC. Everyone is invited to meet the team travelling the length of the Fraser River and to enjoy traditional cultural activities including story telling, arts and crafts, guided tours of the Village, workshops and traditional local food – pit cooking.

3) Boys & Girls Club’s Street Party – Aug 13th from 5 – 9 pm
Enjoy free activities, free food and lots of fun for the whole family on Tuesday August 13th starting at 5 pm. Enjoy the Bouncy Castle, remote control car course, graffiti wall, prizes,  face & nail painting, crafts, and a youth versus RCMP officers water fight! 4) Art Walk Tour begins – Aug 9th
Art Walk organizers and artists will be celebrating the start of Art Walk by meeting at About Face Photography at 11:45 am. They will then be given a guided tour of the first 18 stops in the Art Walk by Mary Forbes. Everyone is welcome to join.

5) Performances in the Park – Thursdays until Aug 22/13

This year’s line-up for Performances in the Park summer concert series rocks!  Get your lawn chairs ready and prepare for a musical celebration for the whole family every Thursday night in Boitanio Park.

6) Fresh Air Film’s Outdoor Movie Night – Boitanio Park Aug 15

Epic is the next movie to be played for free outdoors in Boitanio Park on Aug 15th starting at dusk (pre show activities start at 7pm). Bring a lawn chair or blanket and enjoy the show. Fresh Air films is brought to you by FORTIS BC.

7) Tsilhquot’in hosts Annual Gathering – Aug 20 – 21st
The 23rd annual Tsilhquot’in Nation Gathering is being held on Tuesday Aug 20 and Wednesday Aug 21st at the Chilco Ranch in Hanceville, BC (south side of the Chilcotin Bridge). This is a family event open to everyone including non First Nations. This even attracts approximately 500 people showcasing Tsilhquot’in culture and traditions including entertainment and children’s activities over two days. 8) Call for Artists – Branding the City with Art

Artists and designers are invited to submit up to three entries for a juried competition for the design of banners. Up to four successful designs will be digitally printed on high-quality outdoor banners to be displayed across the City. There is a $150 prize and a flag of the print for each selected art piece. 9) Cops for Cancer BBQ – Friday Aug 16th
At the Williams Lake & District Credit Union from 11 am – 2 pm. All proceeds from the BBQ go to Cops for Cancer Tour de North.

10) Playground Equipment Fund Raiser – Aug 17th
From 11 am – 2 pm on Sunday Aug 17th the Cariboo Adventist Academy is holding a Car Wash & Hotdog sale in the parking lot of All About Hair Studio located at 68A N. Broadway to raise funds for playground equipment.

11) Tour de Cariboo – Sept 7
Williams Lake Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) are inviting anyone interested in signing up for this year’s 21st annual Tour de Cariboo bike ride from Williams Lake to Gavin Lake. To register contact BBBS at 250-398-8391 or register online at www.bbcwlake.com – pledges can also be collected online.

12) Salvation Army Updates
a) You Are Invited -  In combination with Booth University College studies, The Salvation Army in Williams Lake  is holding a workshop designed to learn about Inspirational Leadership and what it looks like when put into practice.

The Salvation Army wants to discover and share as much as we can about Inspirational Leadership in our community, and what you expect or want to see from your leaders. We respect your experiences, your expertise and your opinions and want to take the time to learn more about them.   The finished report on the info gathered from this session and other like it throughout the province will be compiled and evaluated.    This document then can then be shared with all participants.

You are invited to join us on Monday August 19 th  9:00 AM – 3:00 PM in the Fellowship Hall at the Williams Lake Salvation Army  at 267 Borland street for a wonderful day of enlightenment and discovery.

b) Looking for: 1) Volunteers for teaching crafts Mondays from 1 – 2:30 pm (supplies provied). 13) Cariboo Chilcotin Early Years Conference at TRU on Oct 4 & 5th

It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to the 1st annual Cariboo Chilcotin
Early Years Conference. The conference is co-hosted by 100 Mile House CCRR & Williams Lake CCRR in partnership with Success by 6 and Children First. Our planning committee has worked very hard to ensure this will be an
educational and fun event.

Our goal for this conference is to inspire you, encourage you and support you in your journey as an Early Years Educator. We have put together an amazing program that will provide professional development opportunities for all who work with young
children and families.

This is our first Cariboo Chilcotin Early Years Conference and we are excited to invite you to come and be inspired, encouraged and supported.
