The next monthly SPC meeting is being held at the Seniors Activity Centre from 11:30 am  - 1:00 pm- lunch by donation will be available from the Centre's kitchen. There are two main agenda items (please see attached). Minutes for last month's meeting will be available at the meeting.

a) Presentation by Karen Newman on "Get Involved and Make a Difference - Community Action Employment Plan" (Thompson Cariboo Region)

The Community Action Employment Plan (Community Living BC initiative) is a new way for groups to collaborate to create an additional 1,200 jobs over three years for adults with developmental disabilities. In the Thompson Cariboo Region we want to learn how we can build local capacity to increase employment, promote employers as leaders, and develop solutions that are tailored to the unique characteristics of the area.

b) Good Neighbour Bylaw Draft

The SPC has been asked to provide comments and feedback to the City of Williams Lake regarding the draft Good Neighour Bylaw. Anne Burrill will be in attendance and will provide more information.

2) Celebrate World Water Day with a free swim - Sat Mar 22

Sponsored by the Cariboo Chilcotin Conservation Society, this Saturday from 1:30 - 4 pm enjoy a free swim at the Sam Ketchum Pool in Williams Lake. There will also be a Water Wise Info book and free draw for a Banner Bag (reusable bag made from recycled City of Williams Lake banners - great for swim gear and more). a) Board Development Skills Workshop- Mar 29th
Presented jointly by the Agri-Culture Enterprise Centre; Central Interior Regional Arts Council; Cariboo Family Enrichment Centre; South Cariboo Chamber of Commerce and Board Voice. March 29th, 2014 from 10am to 4pm at the Valley Room at the Lodge in 100 Mile House (behind the Red Coach Inn). Lunch Provided.

This workshop on non-profit governance and policy will be of interest to board members and senior staff of non-profit organizations. It focuses on the basic elements of governance—the roles and responsibilities of board members and staff—and the value of policy making as an important element of governance.

Facilitator is Graham Kelsey; Dr. Kelsey is Professor Emeritus of Educational Studies at the University of British Columbia; has served on boards nationally, provincially and locally; in 2012 he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in recognition of his outstanding community service. He is Past President of CIRAC and CCACS.

b) Culture Days - at the Central Cariboo Arts & Culture Society - Apr 2/14
On April 2nd at 2 pm, presented in partnership with the Central Cariboo Arts and Culture Society and the Community Arts Council of Williams Lake, join the Culture Days movement and be a part of BC’s largest celebration of arts, culture and heritage! All professional and amateur artists, arts organizations, cultural workers and community organizers are invited to take part in a free Culture Days workshop to:

Learn how to register an activity and participate in BC Culture Days;
Learn about the many online tips and tools available for planning your activity;
Connect and share ideas with other local activity organizers;
Learn how to make Culture Days a success in your community (Culture Days will take place September 26-28, 2014, in all provinces and territories).

c) Arts in Education Council of BC Fund
The Arts in Education Council of BC Fund offers small grants of up to $500 to support professional development for educators. These grants can be used to assist in the presentation of professional development workshops, clinics or seminars designed to increase the appreciation of the arts for teachers in BC schools, especially at the elementary level. Application deadline is April 4, 2014

d) First Nations School Video Project, Call for Photos

From John Dell: I am working on a project with School District 27 to develop a number of short videos for Grade 5 & 10 curriculum in regards to First Nations, Village life, and the St. Joseph's Mission Residential School. Deadline June 1 2014.

I am looking for old photos (1920-1986) of the Mission, Williams Lake, Cariboo and Chilcotin scenes and activities. Photos selected would be used in school curriculum educational videos and with permission collected and archived with the Cariboo Chilcotin Museum. e) Survey on Operations & Management of the Central Cariboo Arts & Culture Society

By contract with the City of Williams Lake, the Central Cariboo Arts and Culture Society has the responsibility for managing the Central Cariboo Arts Centre, located at 90 Fourth Avenue North in the old Fire Hall. The Central Cariboo Arts Centre opened to tenant groups in late 2010, and, following renovations, opened to other groups and the public in early 2011.
 
The Central Cariboo Arts Centre is for the benefit of all residents of the City of Williams Lake and Areas “D”, “E” and “F” of the Cariboo Regional District. It provides that benefit by housing and showcasing the arts and artistic activity.
 
The Arts Centre is home to three tenant groups, and also has designated “General” space available for meetings, classes, demonstrations, performances (to name a few) by the region’s arts groups. General space may be used for functions by non-arts groups or individuals provided that their use of the room does not conflict with use by members of the arts community, and they agree to pay the appropriate fees. There are approximately 45 various groups who currently use or have used the Centre, along with many individuals.
 
As part of the CCACS's Policy on Evaluation, we are to undertake a review of the operations and management of the Central Cariboo Arts Centre. 6) Reminder - Women's Spirituality Circle - March 28th from 6 - 9 pm
Friday, March 28, 6:00-9:00pm AND Saturday, March 29, 9:00am-4:00pm at Williams Lake Secondary campus on Carson Drive in Williams Lake.
 
In the Cariboo, we have people from many different faith groups and cultural backgrounds. Many do not identify with a particular religion, but do seek a sense of connection with something bigger than themselves. On the last weekend of March, all women are invited to share expressions of faith and explore how others experience spirituality.
 
On Friday, there will be a panel discussion with local women from different spiritual backgrounds, as well as music and conversation. On Saturday, there will many workshops on spiritual practices, and a chance to explore new ideas and ways of looking at the world. There will workshops on yoga, dance, singing, storytelling, prayer, and felting, among others.
 
Free child-minding is offered on-site (pre-register with Eva at 392-4118), while meals and refreshments are included in the ticket price. In order that as many women as possible can participate, the ticket price is on a sliding scale from $2 to $30, so everyone pays what she feels she can afford. Tickets are available at Dollar Dollar, Smashin' Smoothies, the CMHA office, or by calling 778-412-2999. Tickets are on sale until March 24.

Please join us in our second community meeting where we can work together to capture regional employment work and find ideas, actions and solutions to increase employment opportunities.

Who Should Attend: Individuals with developmental disabilities, families, community workers, service providers, employers, educators, caregivers from the Thompson Cariboo Region.

Another reminder with an agenda and last month's meeting minutes will be sent out next week. Even if you cannot stay for the entire meeting, we hope to see you there.

TRU Human Service Diploma -  needs a practicum placement for one student in our Human Service Diploma.  This is a 2nd year student completing the program. The placement is a block (fulltime )placement from Mar 24th until April 30th ( approximately 5.5 weeks) .

The Suicide Prevention Committee has developed this toolkit for the family member of a person 15-24 years of age who is experiencing a difficult time in his/her life. When a person is in crisis, family members may have many questions. The kit is designed to provide some answers. The committee received funding through the United Way to develop this kit. 11) Performances in the Park - call for submissions reminder
Presented by the Central Cariboo Arts and Culture Society, the City of Williams Lake and the Cariboo Regional District.

The Central Cariboo Arts and Culture Society is happy to announce that Performances in the Park, the outdoor free summer concert series, will begin on Thursday, July 3rd at 6:00pm and will continue each Thursday evening at the same time at the Gwen Ringwood Theatre in Williams Lake’s Boitanio Park until August 21st. Once again, with the support of the City of Williams Lake and the Cariboo Regional District, the Central Cariboo Arts and Culture Society will be presenting this event under the management of Angela Sommer of Angelkeys Music Studio.

The concert series will feature two acts each week; one at 6pm to showcase performances including youth, theatre, dance, musical and fashion shows, followed by a headline act from 7:00 – 8:00 pm. All acts will be family friendly.

We are currently looking for performers of every type to fill these performances. Redbird Communications is conducting research on what makes volunteers tick, on behalf of the Kidney Foundation of Canada (BC Branch). We're looking for people to attend an evening workshop where they will help identify benefits and barriers to volunteering, share ideas about how to recruit and retain volunteers, and brainstorm the ideal volunteer experience. Participants can be volunteers (for the Kidney Foundation or for other organizations) or non-volunteers; we want your opinion either way! Participants will receive a $20 gift card to Tim Horton's, and a chance to win a trip for two to Vancouver in May. They'll also leave the workshop with some great ideas for engaging volunteers in their own organizations.

4) From the Community that Cares - Community Board Table

Domestic Violence Presentation is an open invitation to anyone who would like to attend (please phone to confirm attendance for catering purposes).  It’s being offered through Victim Services in Williams Lake and the WLIB is hosting it.

Health and Science Career Fair – if anyone in the health and science field would like to have a booth set up you can contact Kyle or Lynn.

Walking In Balance (Mobile Treatment through Nenqani) is also an open invitation (lunch and snacks are provided every day) and the last day for this event is March 14, 2014.

The first meeting for our 10 K run (don’t have a name yet) will be Friday, April 11, 2014 at Chief James Louie Upstairs Boardroom start time will be 10 am. We are looking for volunteers to help with the upcoming event. I am getting excited as just from word of mouth a lot of our aboriginal communities are already wanting to sign up.

Do you have what it takes to be a lifeguard? This profession has flexible hours and good pay. These courses are the first stepping stones to becoming a qualified lifeguard.

Bronze Medallion - Prerequisite -  Bronze Star or 13 years of age

This challenging course is the first step towards becoming a lifeguard. It induces instruction in lifesaving skills, water rescue and first aid. March 10 - 14, 12:00 - 4:00pm $185.00 (for 5 classes)

Bronze Cross & CPR C - Prerequisite - Bronze Medallion & 13 years of age

This program increases participant's knowledge in lifesaving and lifeguarding skills, water rescue and first aid. This course is worth two high school credits. All candidates must provide a copy of a current Bronze Medallion when they register. March 17 - 21, 12:00 - 4:00pm $153 (5 classes).

11) Reminder - Alzheimer Society Workshops - begins March 11th from 9 am - 5 pm

A five session series for family members who are caring for a person with dementia and covers: Understanding Dementia, Understanding Communication, Understanding behavior, Planning for the future and self-care for caregivers.  Tuesday March 11th from 9 am - 5 pm at the Williams Lake Seniors Village Education room (basement) by donation.
