What is The Social Planning Council?

Activities:

o Monthly Meetings: Attend meetings with guest speakers from within the community &/or presentations at each meeting. We currently meet the fourth Monday of every month (excluding summer) at City Hall with light lunch by donation.

o Facebook & Email Group: Utilize the network on Facebook. Start discussions, learn about & share upcoming community events, projects and meetings. If you don’t use Facebook, then join the email network instead.

o Inform City Council: The SPC provides reports to City Council regularly and the City keeps the SPC informed. Use the network and have your voices heard.



Strategic Direction of the Social Planning Council of Williams Lake & Area:

o Poverty Reduction and the local Living Wage Campaign.

o Community Collaboration and Networking.

o Retention and Succession of residents within the Area.



Community Social Planning:

o Supports communities in building an integrated approach to complex problems that take into account social, economic, and environmental concerns.

o Maximizes the effectiveness of often scarce resources by working to reduce duplication, overlap and competition.

o Provides an ongoing forum for communication, coordination and conflict resolution.

3) Enjoy free Family Day events this Monday at the Rec Centre
To celebrate the Family Day Holiday this Monday Feb 9th enjoy free lazer skating from 12 - 1:30 pm and a free swim with games, toys and contests from 1:30 - 3:30 pm at the Recreation Complex. Call 250-398-7665 for more information.

4) Free Tumble & Play - Saturdays
Enjoy free "Tumble and Play" on Saturdays at the Marie Sharpe Gym from 10 - 11:30 am. This is an active parent and tot playtime where you can bounce, catch, slide, race and tumble. A variety of sports equipment, toys and mats will be available. Adult participation is required. Sponsored by Success by Six, this program is free to participants.

5) Daybreak Rotary's 24th Annual Book Sale Feb 15 - 28th
Giant used book sale in the upper level of Boitanio Mall. Donations are greatly appreciated with collection bins at: Safeway, Save-on Foods, Western Financial, Boitanio Mall entrance the 150 Mile House Centre or call 250-392-4498 for pickups.

6) Williams Lake Wanderers - February Schedule
To join this group, come about 10:30 am to the Cariboo Memorial Complex on a Tues., Wed., or Thursday. We always begin our outings from there, so you can fill out a membership form and pay your $10 annual fee. We leave at 10:45 am. Once you're a member, you will receive emails with schedule and schedule changes. Schedules and updates are also on Facebook.

Whether we walk or snowshoe will depend on the amount of snow at the time, so, perhaps, bring snowshoes along if in doubt.

Thurs. Feb. 5 – Doc English Lake hike/snowshoe ( Beecher's Prairie)

Wed. Feb. 11– Anderson Road walk/snowshoe ( Dog Creek Road)
Thurs/Fri. Feb.12/13 – Gavin Lake ski /snowshoe( stay overnight if enough interested)
Tues. Feb. 17 – SPCA snowshoe/walk ( Highway 20)
Wed. Feb.18 – Old Cabin snowshoe/walk ( Esler)
Thurs. Feb. 19 – Cow Trail meadow ski ( Esler)
Tues. Feb. 24 – Mission Road walk ( 150 Mile)
Wed. Feb. 25 – Anderson Road ski ( Dog Creek Road)
Thurs. Feb. 26 – Fox Mountain rim walk

All of these activities are subject to change according to weather conditions, so keep an eye on your email/Facebook.

7) Mental Health Services Gap Analysis Survey results at the CRD

Feb 19th at the South Cariboo Recreation Centre in 100 Mile House from 12 - 1 pm
Feb 26th at the CRD Boardroom in Williams Lake from 12 - 1pm

8) Mark the calendar - Presentation by Community Futures on Feb 23rd
At the next Social Planning Council meeting on Monday Feb 23rd at 11:30 am, Larry Stranberg from Community Futures will be presenting survey data on the subject below:

"The Cariboo Chilcotin area is experiencing many challenges when looking at the retention of small business in the region.  One of the primary reasons is that a significant percentage of small business owners are of the "baby-boomer" generation.  A survey conducted by our office (January 2011) of small business owners in our service area showed that..."

Please join us for lunch and the survey results. Also at this next meeting, Darrell Garceau from the City of Williams Lake will be joining us can address any questions you may have. We hope to see you there. This month the meeting will be at the Central Cariboo Arts & Culture Society located at the old Firehall next to the City.

9) Winter Wellness Family Gathering - Feb 12th
On Feb 12th, strengthen the circle of support around families at Denisiqi Services Society. Meet your community service providers, entertainment and door prizes and lunch for everybody.

"Please note that we are calling all service providers and people who would like to sell their arts and crafts at the event (no table charge) to come and participate in our event. We will have an area specifically for service provider booths and another area for people to sell their arts and crafts. Anyone interested will have to book their tables ahead to insure a spot for that day. We will also have entertainment and food, so come and join us."
