What is The Social Planning Council?

Activities:

o Monthly Meetings: Attend meetings with guest speakers from within the community &/or presentations at each meeting. We currently meet the fourth Monday of every month (excluding summer) at City Hall with light lunch by donation.

o Facebook & Email Group: Utilize the network on Facebook. Start discussions, learn about & share upcoming community events, projects and meetings. If you don’t use Facebook, then join the email network instead.

o Inform City Council: The SPC provides reports to City Council regularly and the City keeps the SPC informed. Use the network and have your voices heard.



Strategic Direction of the Social Planning Council of Williams Lake & Area:

o Poverty Reduction and the local Living Wage Campaign.

o Community Collaboration and Networking.

o Retention and Succession of residents within the Area.



Community Social Planning:

o Supports communities in building an integrated approach to complex problems that take into account social, economic, and environmental concerns.

o Maximizes the effectiveness of often scarce resources by working to reduce duplication, overlap and competition.

o Provides an ongoing forum for communication, coordination and conflict resolution.

There is a desperate need for protein food items - canned pasta, beans, tuna, salmon, ham. Please drop off or call Sabrina at 250-392-2429.

Volunteers are also needed - prep cooks, lunch-time servers, afternoon coffee servers and food room sorting. For more info stop by 272 Borland Street, or call 250-392-2423.

2) Annual Horsefly Ducks Unlimited Banquet and Auction - Sept Oct 4th
At the Horsefly Community Hall - doors open at 6, with dinner at 7pm. Tickets are available at Clarke's General store, or contact Alison for more info at 250-267-6105

3) The World of Self employment - information session Oct 9th at 3 pm - limited spaces
What do you need to get started?

Join us for an interactive look into Self-employment. Presented in partnership with Community Living BC, learn what local experts have to share about working for yourself.
Larry Stranberg is the Projects Manager for Community Futures Cariboo Chilcotin. Larry has coached and mentored countless business owners to build their business plans and launch their dreams. His presentation will be supported by Nancy Thompson, Williams Lake Employment Services Manager, business woman and entrepreneurial die-hard.

Participants will have an opportunity to learn and engage with the presenters about:

What an entrepreneur is
Defining products, services and customers
Marketing basics
Getting paid (AKA making money)
Startup costs and how to obtain them

Larry and Nancy will be available to answer questions about what community supports and resources are available to individuals who are ready to take the leap into self-employment.

4) International Walk to School Week - Oct 6 - 10th
This encourages physical activity, healthy practices, fresh air, better academic performance and improves air quality while reducing school traffic congestion. Join others around the globe and encourage students (and teachers) to walk to school next week.

5) Potato House - live concert Thursday Oct 9th at 7 pm
At the Potato House - Concert starts at 7:30 pm - by donation!

6) Dry Grad - planning & preparation - Thursday Oct 9th at 7pm
Volunteers are needed for Dry Grad to happen this year. Students & parents (grades 11 & 12) and ALL community members are encouraged to attend the open meeting on Oct 9th at 7pm in the Commons Area at Lake City Secondary School (WL campus). If you are unable to attend, but want to participate or volunteer please call 250-392-8057 or 250-302-8423 and leave your name and contact information.

7) City of Williams Lake declares Sept 28 - Oct 5th "Celebrate Life Week"
Whereas: We believe that the most basic and valuable right is the right to life on which all other rights depend; and

Whereas: We believe that the value of every life is determined not by what he or she does but rather by the fact that every human being is unique; and

Whereas: We believe that the measure of a civilization is judged by the care it gives to its weakest members; and

Whereas: Social justice demands that we involve ourselves in making society concerned about every life.

8) Drive One 4 Ur School - Lake City Secondary fundraiser from 10am - 3pm
Stop by Boitanio Mall this Saturday Oct 4th and test drive a Ford to help raise funds. Lake City Ford will donate $20 per test drive. The school hopes to make $6000 - come out and test drive "4 Ur School".

Hot dogs, donuts, coffee and hot chocolate will be served.

9) Caribou Brain Injury Society - AGM Tuesday Oct 7th at 5pm
Come out to Trattoria Pasta Shop at 5pm - Everyone is welcome, and Board members are needed. Call the Society at 250-392-7772 for more information.

11) Reminder - tomorrow's OAPO Pancake Breakfast at Seniors Centre - Sat Oct 4th at 8:30 am
The pancake breakfast will be followed by the regularly scheduled Saturday Bingo at 12pm. Everyone is welcome to attend.

12) United Way's Community Investment Fund Fundraiser - Oct 3rd "Wined up to Give"
There is still time to get your tickets and support community projects in the Cariboo. Show your support again this year - attend the "WINED UP to GIVE"  event tonight, Oct 3rd. Tickets are available at the Laughing Loon for $50 or by calling Melinda at 250-267-8080.

Cocktails at 6pm, Dinner at 7pm - There will be door prizes (including from the Station House Gallery, the Bean Counter, OK Tire, Red Tomato Pies, and bottles of Wine. The silent auction features tickets from Pacific Coastal Air, Spa package from LUSH & Cobalt Spas, Canucks tickets and Hotel packages. There will also be shuttles home courtesy of Cariboo GM (in the event you do not want to drive).

13) Boys & Girls Club - ongoing programs
Afterschool Program from 3 - 5:30 pm Monday - Friday. Costs $20 for full days (and $10 for partial days).

Noopa Youth Centre - open Mon - Thursday from 3:15 - 8 pm, and on Fridays from 4 - 10pm - free.

14) Seniors Advocacy Council meeting at 12:00 noon at the Seniors Activity Centre - Oct 16th
October the 16th. Guest speakers will be Trisha Shelter Manager at Deni House and John Messier chair of the CRD Hospital Board .They  will bring us up,to date to Deni House and Cariboo Memorial Hospital activities. 15) Reminder: Cultivating Emotional Balance - Intro Talk tonight Oct 3rd at 6:30 pm
Introductory talk with the world renowned teacher, Venerable Tenzin Chogkyi on Friday, October 3rd​ from 6:30 to 8:00 pm at the New World Coffee & Tea House 72 Oliver Street, Williams Lake

Starting October 18th, Gendun Drubpa Centre will be offering a training in Cultivating Emotional Balance, so this introductory talk is especially intended for those who are curious about the Cultivating Emotional Balance training and would like more information about what the training involves.
