What is The Social Planning Council?

Activities:

o Monthly Meetings: Attend meetings with guest speakers from within the community &/or presentations at each meeting. We currently meet the fourth Monday of every month (excluding summer) at City Hall with light lunch by donation.

o Facebook & Email Group: Utilize the network on Facebook. Start discussions, learn about & share upcoming community events, projects and meetings. If you don’t use Facebook, then join the email network instead.

o Inform City Council: The SPC provides reports to City Council regularly and the City keeps the SPC informed. Use the network and have your voices heard.



Strategic Direction of the Social Planning Council of Williams Lake & Area:

o Poverty Reduction and the local Living Wage Campaign.

o Community Collaboration and Networking.

o Retention and Succession of residents within the Area.



Community Social Planning:

o Supports communities in building an integrated approach to complex problems that take into account social, economic, and environmental concerns.

o Maximizes the effectiveness of often scarce resources by working to reduce duplication, overlap and competition.

o Provides an ongoing forum for communication, coordination and conflict resolution.

June 6 is National Access Awareness Day.  Access Awareness Day is a campaign to raise awareness about accessibility and inclusion.

2) Free Salon Day for Graduation - Jun 6th from 1 - 4 pm
At the Glass Slippers Boutique which helps graduates with low income attend their festivities. Loans prom dresses, arranges tux rentals; possible support with grad fees, hair appointments, or other grad expenses.

Drop-in from 1 - 4pm for Hairdressing, Nail Art, Make-up, and snacks at #70 South 1st Ave (across from Red Shreds).

Note - donations are still needed for young men's black dress shoes. Also needed are volunteers, a flat iron, large safety pins, and beauty supplies including hairclips, hair spray and makeup. 4) UNBC's Community Development Institute - Focus Group in Williams Lake Jun 18th
Good afternoon,

I am writing to ask for your participation in a focus group for a project that the Community Development Institute (CDI) at the University of Northern British Columbia is undertaking.

This project will explore issues and challenges faced by the voluntary health and social service sector in the context of significant community transition. As part of this project, we at the CDI are conducting a series of focus groups with people involved in the voluntary health and social service sector. I am writing to ask if you would participate in a focus group as part of this consultation process.    

We are conducting these focus groups in Williams Lake on June 18th 2015 at three different times during the day. The focus group will last 1.5 hours.
Focus groups will be run at: 1:30 pm, 3:30 pm and 5:30 pm

Please let me know if you are available to attend a focus group and what time would work best for you and I will forward you further information. I can also answer any additional questions that you might have about the project.

5) Targeted Initiative for Older Workers - Job Skills Training Opportunity at Horton Ventures
Who is this for?

Participants must meet the following eligibility criteria:
· Unemployed
· Between 50-64, (emphasis on 55-64) and 65+ (if planning to stay in the workforce for 2 or more years)
· Be legally entitled to work in Canada
· Lack skills required for successful integration into new employment
· Live in an eligible community/region
· Be ready and committed to returning to work

What will you get?

Participants may be eligible to receive:
· Class-based skill development – including job searching and career planning
· Funding to access training at local educational institutions/trainers
· Income support for the duration of in-class training

6) Get involved with your Salvation Army - Volunteers needed for below activities
The Salvation Army is short on volunteers for their drop in, soup kitchen, food bank and thrift store. Many regulars go away in the summer time so they are short of volunteers this time of year.  Please contact Dina at the Salvation Army for more information at 250-392-2423 or stop by 272 Borland Street.

At the drop-in centre there is always something going on:

Monday - Crochet Class 10:30 - 11:45 am and Craft Class from 1:15 - 2:30 pm - all supplies are available.

Tuesday - H2O study group from 10:30 - 11:45 am and Crib Tournaments from 1:15 - 4pm.

Wednesday - free Coffee Talk from 10:30 - 11:45 am, and Pool Tournament from 1:15 - 4pm

Thursday - Never Alone 12-Step program from 10:30 - 11:45 am and Movie time (with juice and popcorn) from 1:15 - 2:30 pm

Friday - Prayer/Devotion time from 8:45 am - 9 am, Gym is open from 9:15 - 10:15 am, and the Life Skills program runs from 10:30 - 11:45 am. Friday afternoons is an open time to just drop-in, have a chat and enjoy a cup of coffee.

7) Williams Lake Wanderers - June Schedule
For June, some activities will be longer. Expect to bring a lunch & be prepared to give a few $ ( probably 5 or under)  to your driver if they are transporting you or your bike/kayak for any distance.

For June, we will leave the Sam Ketcham Complex at 9:00 am, so come around 8:45 to get organized. We always begin our outings from there on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays,, so you can fill out a membership form and pay your $10 annual fee if you wish to join us. Once you're a member, you will receive emails with schedule and schedule changes. Schedules and updates are also on Facebook.

8) Cariboo Art Society Art Show - Jun 1 - 13th
The Cariboo Art Society has displays of their wonderful art displayed in the Signal Point Events Centre as well as in the artist corner in the Point Restaurant and Lounge.

9) Volunteers needed - Helping Seniors Remain Independent
Through the Williams Lake Better at Home program we will be offering support services to assist seniors with simple non-medical day-to-day tasks so they can continue to live independently in their own homes and stay connected to their communities. 

Can You Help? Williams Lake Better at Home needs volunteers to provide: Transportation to medical appointments, Light housekeeping, Minor home repairs, Light yard work, Grocery shopping and Friendly Visiting

11) Caribou Brain Injury Society's  Third Annual Golf Tournament fundraiser - Jun 13th
With all proceeds benefitting the Caribou Brain Injury Society, head out to Bell-E-Acres on Jun 13th from 10am - 3:30 pm (awards start at 4pm). Concession, silent auction, hidden balls and hole prizes. Fun for all ages with many prizes to be won in the following categories: 1st place golfer, 2nd place golfer, 3rd place golfer, 1st place Team/Couple, 1st place mini-golfer, Long Putt and closest to the pin.

12) Caring for Kids New to Canada - Webinar on Jun 10th at 1:30 pm (registration required)
Join us on June 10th at 1pm (eastern time) for a Canadian Paediatric Society webinar about ways the "Caring for Kids New to Canada" website can be used by health professionals to prevent, identify and manage key health issues affecting newcomer children and youth. Practical website tools to aid in the screening process, such as the e-checklist and the signs and symptoms tool will be highlighted.

The webinar will be presented by Dr. Tony Barozzino of Toronto's St. Michael's Hospital, and Dr. Susan Kuhn of Alberta Children's Hospital in Calgary. 13) Williams Lake Hospice Society Volunteer Training - Jun 12, 13, 19, and 20th
Williams Lake Hospice Society Volunteer Training will be held June 12, 13 & 19, 20th, 2015 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. The training will be held at the Hospice office 530 - 4th Ave N.

The course sessions include: Communication Skills, Psychosocial Issues, Physical Processes of Dying, Pain and Symptom Management, Spirituality, Family Centered Care, Funeral and Legal Issues, Grief, and Self-care for Hospice Volunteers. Training is provided by the Society staff, Hospice Volunteers and guest speakers.

The course objectives are as follows:
  • explore personal and professional relationships involved in caring for those who are dying or grieving a loss of a loved one,
  • explore and reflect on one's own journey,
  • increase awareness and sensitivity to death and grief issues,
  • explore the experiences of those who are facing death and bereavement,
  • provide opportunities to enhance skills in dealing with patient, family and care-giving issues,
  • explore considerations in providing "individually sensitive" care,
  • provide opportunities to reflect and integrate learning into practice.

Fee for the course is $60. This includes $50 to cover materials and $10 for a one year membership in the Society.

Making the road less lonely

14) WLIB - 10K Walk/Run/Relay Event - Jun 20th
The Williams Lake Indian Band Social Development Department is hosting a 10km Walk/Run/Relay event on Jun 20th that is funded by SportMed Aboriginal Run Walk and Three Corners Health Services Society.  The event is meant to encourage all communities to come out and have a fun day with a focus on healthy living activities.  The SportMed team will be providing the warm-up and the door prizes that will be drawn.

Check in will be at the Sugar Cane Gymnasium with the route starting from the Gymnasium down Mission Road and turn-around at the 5 km mark.
