What is The Social Planning Council?

Activities:

o Monthly Meetings: Attend meetings with guest speakers from within the community &/or presentations at each meeting. We currently meet the fourth Monday of every month (excluding summer) at City Hall with light lunch by donation.

o Facebook & Email Group: Utilize the network on Facebook. Start discussions, learn about & share upcoming community events, projects and meetings. If you don’t use Facebook, then join the email network instead.

o Inform City Council: The SPC provides reports to City Council regularly and the City keeps the SPC informed. Use the network and have your voices heard.



Strategic Direction of the Social Planning Council of Williams Lake & Area:

o Poverty Reduction and the local Living Wage Campaign.

o Community Collaboration and Networking.

o Retention and Succession of residents within the Area.



Community Social Planning:

o Supports communities in building an integrated approach to complex problems that take into account social, economic, and environmental concerns.

o Maximizes the effectiveness of often scarce resources by working to reduce duplication, overlap and competition.

o Provides an ongoing forum for communication, coordination and conflict resolution.

1) Next Social Planning Council Meeting - Monday Apr 27th at the City

Next Social Planning Council Meeting - Monday Apr 27th at 11:30 am at the Central Cariboo Arts & Culture Society (the Old Fire hall). This will be a cafe style strategic planning session where as individuals we will provide input on action items for the next year.  Light lunch will be provided (donations are appreciated but never required!). Hope to see you there!



To make things more efficient and allow people who are unable to attend participate in advance and have their responses to be shared  (anonymous or not). Next week's email will be the preparation for the meeting. A survey will be sent out, related to the OCP sections, and the current strategic pillars of the SPC - please participate and encourage others to do so.



2) "Making Peace" 2nd Annual Women's Spirituality Circle - Apr 17 - 18th

Where do you find peace in your life? How do we make peace - within ourselves our families our communities amidst the challenges of our world?



Join with women of the Cariboo and beyond to explore the topic of peace from many different spiritual viewpoints. This is a safe and open space for all women, whether they have a strong faith in an organized religion, are spiritual but not religious, or have no spiritual path.



Fri 17th evening - 5pm dinner, multi-faith panel & entertainment - $15 (times are tough? $5)

Sat 18th daytime - Informational and creative workshops - $35 (times are tough? $10)

Location - Williams Lake Secondary School

3) April is BOOK DRIVE month - CCPL

Cariboo Chilcotin Partners for Literacy (CCPL) April Book Drive (and Books for Babies) runs all month long. Please donate used children's books for the Bright Red Bookshelves at local elementary schools, the Salt Jar, the Public Library, Heartland Toyota or bookshelves around the City. 4) Communities that Care's - Positive Action Word of the Week

The Positive Action word of the week of Apr 13, 2015 is: Cooperation: To work with others for a common purpose.

5) Seniors Games - participation encouraged

Seniors are encouraged to compete or volunteer in the upcoming 2015 BC Seniors Games taking place in North Vancouver Aug 25-29th. The games include everything from bocce, cycling, table tennis, archery, bridge, crib and five pin bowling. Or volunteer - contact Ellen Wiege at 250-392-3537. Local fundraising efforts to offset the costs of travel for the Games is a pork roast dinner on Apr 12th at the Seniors Activity Centre. Get tickets at the Centre for $15 per (no tickets will be sold at the door).



6) Accessibility Awards - taking nominations

The Williams Lake Accessibility Advisory Committee would like to encourage community members to nominate individuals, organizations and businesses that have made a significant contribution to improve accessibility within the City for the prestigious Annual Accessibility Award of Merit. Application deadline is Apr 24th, with awards being announced during Access Awareness Day in June. For more information please visit www.williamslake.ca/267/Accessibility-Award



7) Poster Contest - Accessibility

Can you draw? Paint? Scribble? Want to help people who have a disability? Enter the contest to celebrate Access Awareness Day in June to raise public awareness about people with disabilities.



Draw a poster about something to do with disability: and experience you have had with someone who is disabled, a family member or friend with a disability, something you have observed, what a person with a disability has done, a difficulty they have encountered or something or some change needed in the world. Deadline for submissions is May 4th with prizes of $100 first place, $75 for second place and $25 for third place in each age category: Children to age 12, people aged 13 - 19, and Adults (19+).

8) Connect Parent Program - begins Apr 14th

There is an upcoming Connect Parent Program which will be beginning April 14, 2015 and run for 10 weeks. The Connect program is a partnership between Simon Fraser University, the Maples Adolescent Treatment Centre and MCFD. It has been developed for parents and caregivers of youth based on research examining:

9) Grant Opportunities - Mental Health Services

These grant opportunities have been shared via the Let's Talk About Mental Health in the Cariboo initiative network. If your organization will be applying for any of these grants, you are encouraged to let each other know and provide any assistance you can to one another. Canada Post Foundation: Grants of up to $50,000 available for mental health programs for children and youth. Apply March - April 2015.




RBC Children's Mental Health Project: Applications accepted year-round.




Pacific Blue Cross (Community Connection Health Foundation): Funds high-impact initiatives that work with partners to promote healthy lifestyle choices and positive mental health outcomes across the province. Next application deadlines: March 19 and May 20.




TELUS Community Investment: Funds social innovation and health/well-being initiatives with a focus on youth. Up to $20,000 available. Next deadline is May 2015.




10) Culture Days - Call for BC Artists & Cultural Workers

Are you an artist or cultural worker active in promoting arts & culture in your community? If yes, BC Culture Days invites you to apply to be the next BC Culture Days Ambassador. Deadline is Apr 13th, and the top finalist will win a trip to the National Congress on Culture in Edmonton from May 7 - 8th and $2500 towards the production of their culture days events.

11) Boys & Girls Club fundraiser - Race for Kids (Amazing race style)

Looking for teams and volunteers: The Boys and Girls Club of Williams Lake is thrilled to announce a fun, new fundraiser to Williams Lake! We are participating in a new fundraising initiative called "Capital One Race for Kids". The event will take place on May 23, 2015 and is described as a combination of Amazing Race and Minute-to-Win-it. All funds raised from this event will support our after school programs.



After school is a crucial time to keep children and youth active and engaged. Giving children the opportunity for after school activities can positively influence individuals and communities in many ways. Your support of this event would be most appreciated and help to make our event successful. At this point we are looking for the community’s support in 2 ways:



a) Looking for Volunteers – we need lots of help with this event. Volunteers can sign-up right on the website www.raceforkids.ca/williamslake



b) Looking for Teams – the more the merrier! Teams of 4 can register any time on the website. If your place of business would like to put in a team, then the business itself can sponsor that team and help them with their fundraising efforts! The top individual fundraiser in Williams Lake will receive a WestJet voucher for two to anywhere WestJet flies!

13) Cariboo Piecemakers Quilt Club - Jean Andersen Memorial Show Apr 18 - 19th

Being held at the Williams Lake Curling Rink, on Saturday Apr 18 from 10am - 6pm, and on Sunday Apr 19th from 10am - 4pm (admission $3). Quilt show with a special tribute to Jean Andersen.
