What is The Social Planning Council?

Activities:

o Monthly Meetings: Attend meetings with guest speakers from within the community &/or presentations at each meeting. We currently meet the fourth Monday of every month (excluding summer) at City Hall with light lunch by donation.

o Facebook & Email Group: Utilize the network on Facebook. Start discussions, learn about & share upcoming community events, projects and meetings. If you don’t use Facebook, then join the email network instead.

o Inform City Council: The SPC provides reports to City Council regularly and the City keeps the SPC informed. Use the network and have your voices heard.



Strategic Direction of the Social Planning Council of Williams Lake & Area:

o Poverty Reduction and the local Living Wage Campaign.

o Community Collaboration and Networking.

o Retention and Succession of residents within the Area.



Community Social Planning:

o Supports communities in building an integrated approach to complex problems that take into account social, economic, and environmental concerns.

o Maximizes the effectiveness of often scarce resources by working to reduce duplication, overlap and competition.

o Provides an ongoing forum for communication, coordination and conflict resolution.

1) Salvation Army - Christmas Craft Days
On Friday's at 1pm beginning today Dec 5th and running until Dec 19th the Salvation Army craft making event - come and learn how to make someone a special Xmas gift with Capt Isobel Lippers.

2) Purple Ribbon Campaign - end violence against women
The Women's Contact Society (WCS) campaign to end violence against women is in full swing until Sunday Dec 7th. You will notice purple hair extensions and buttons being worn by people around town to help raise awareness. For more information please contact the WCS office.

3) Communities that Care's - Positive Action Word of the Week - "Challenge"
The Positive Action word of the week of Nov 25th is Challenge: A task that calls for special effort

4) Child Development Centre's 9th Annual Christmas Wish breakfast - Dec 16th
The annual  Christmas Wish buffet Breakfast on Dec 16th from 6 - 10 am at the Ramada. These meals help countless local families who cannot afford to buy gifts for their children. The cost of the breakfast is either cash donation or a new unwrapped child's toy. To sponsor a meal(s), please stop by the CDC at 690 N 2nd Ave or call 250-392-4481 with any further questions.

5) Hospice's 19th Annual Memory Tree Celebration
The Williams Lake Hospice Society is celebrating their 19th Annual Memory Tree Celebration on Sunday, December 7th @ the Council Chambers, City Hall from 3:00pm to 4:30 pm. It is the perfect opportunity to remember and commemorate those who have passed away and a place for our community to gather for mutual support.

The celebration opens in the City Hall lobby with snacks and refreshments, followed by poems and spiritual readings in the City Hall Chambers. Choir performances, harp music, candle lighting, reading of the Memory Book and a moment of silence are all part of the festivities. The celebration concludes with the lighting of the Memory Tree outside City Hall at 4:30pm.

Everyone is invited!! Whether you are there to remember a loved one and purchase an ornament in their name or simply to celebrate the season.

If you wish to donate in memory of a loved one and have their name added to the Memory Tree, please come see us at Save On Foods from November 24th -December 6th.

6) Salvation Army Christmas Kettles Campaign - donate to the food bank
Salvation Army Kettles will be setup to take donations at Walmart, Canadian Tire, the Wholesale Club, SaveOnFoods, Safeway and the Liquor Store. To volunteer call Sandra at 250-392-1072 or Ben at 250-392-2423.

7) Reminder - Central Cariboo Arts & Culture Society's 2015 Grant Application & Deadlines
The CCACS for Williams Lake and CRD Areas D, E and F

Project grants are available for non-profit organizations or community groups in Williams Lake and the Central Cariboo (CRD Areas D, E, and F) to support and develop arts and culture within this region. The funding for these grants is courtesy of the City of Williams Lake and the Cariboo Regional District on the recommendation of the Central Cariboo Arts and Culture Society (Central Cariboo Arts & Culture function), and is subject to the availability of funds.

The 2015 Grants program is now accepting Project Grant applications with a deadline of January 30, 2015 at 4pm.

Project Grants of between $300 and $2,000 are available for projects which
  • Are new or build creatively on previous work
  • Are likely to increase participation in arts & culture
  • Take place within the Central Cariboo region (Williams Lake and/or CRD Areas D, E, and F)
  • Will be completed by December 31st 2015
  • Include some financial or in-kind contribution by the applicant

8) Free Tumble & Play pre-school program Saturdays from 10 - 11:30 am
Sponsored by Success by Six, this program is free to participants. This active parent & tot playtime offers children (ages 9 months to five years) and parents an opportunity to bounce, catch, slide, play, race and tumble with other children (adult participation is required). Tumbling mats will be available. For more information contact the Recreation Complex at 250-398-7665.
This program runs until Feb 28th in the Marie Sharpe School Gym.

9) Seklep Warriors Youth Group hosts Flea Market - Dec 6th
Date: December 6th 2014
Time: 10:00 AM-3:00 PM
Place: Elizabeth Grouse Gymnasium (Located in Sugar Cane)

Tables:
$10 a table if paid at least two days prior to the event or $15 a table if you pay on the day of the event. A  concession will be available, as well as 50/50 ticket sales and a Loonie Auction

10) CMHA's Women's Spirituality Circle's Winter Solstice Celebration - Dec 21st
The Canadian Mental Health Association Multiculturalism Program and Women's Spirituality Circle invite you to Winter Solstice Celebration.

Illuminate the darkness with food, friends, music and dance!

11) Drumming & Singing @ Denisiqi - Tuesday's
Every Tuesday from 3:30 – 5:00 starting December 2, 2014
For ALL children and youth, ages 10 – 18 year

Traditional drumming & singing, Sharing stories, Drum protocol, Pop, country, folk, and rock songs, Guitar and encourage youth to continue to explore Aboriginal culture                                                                                      and traditions as well as foster a love for music and singing.

Youth need to arrange rides to and from the group, with pick up @ 5:00. We are @ 240B N. Mackenzie Ave.(Beside the Brick)

12) Williams Lake Wanderers - December 2014 schedule
We are  optimistically assuming we'll have snow for most of these December activities. If not, we'll walk instead. Unless specified otherwise, these outings should be about 1 ½ hours. (not including drive time for some)

We will leave the Sam Ketcham Complex at 10:45 am, so come around 10:30 to get organized. We always begin our outings from there on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, so you can fill out a membership form and pay your $10 annual fee if you wish to become a member. Once you're a member, you will receive emails with schedule and schedule changes. Schedules and updates are also on Facebook.

13) Banff Mountain Film Festival – December 9, 7:00pm
At the Gibraltar Room. Tickets are available at the door (Adults $19, Students & Seniors $14) and now on sale at the Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex & Red Shreds Bike & Board Shed. Contact the Recreation Complex for more information.

14) Gingerbread House Decorating - Dec 7th
Of course we all know the Gingerbread Man ran away when the oven door opened, but maybe he wouldn't have if he had a cozy home to run to!

The Williams Lake SDA Church is sponsoring a Gingerbread House event, proceeds going toward Williams Lake Adventurers -- a program designed to help young children develop well-rounded, responsible attributes. 
           
Run, run, as fast as you can -- you can't catch me, I'm the Gingerbread Man!  Reservations needed by December 1 while openings last.  Your choice of times on December 7 -- 10:30am, 12:15pm, 2pm and 3:45pm at Williams Lake SDA Church, 782 Ninth Ave. North.  Cost is $7.  Decorate your own house -- icing, house, and candy supplied.  Please call Amy at 302-9398.

15) Annual Christmas Concert - Dec 20th at 6:30 pm
You are invited to the “The Warm Glow of Christmas!”  This annual holiday event features various musicians from the Cariboo.  An offering for the poor will be taken up.  Refreshments to follow the program -- feel free to bring a plate of goodies!  This event takes place at the Adventist Church at 782 9th Ave N., in Williams Lake.  For more information please call 250-398-5642.

Oaths of Office and Allegiance. Chief Administrative Officer Darrell Garceau conducted the swearing in of the newly elected members of Council:

Presentations to Outgoing Council members:

Outgoing mayor Kerry Cook presented new mayor Walt Cobb with the Chain of Office. Mayor Cobb presented Kerry Cook with a gift and thanked her for her service during two terms as mayor. Councillor Laurie Walters presented a gift to Geoff Bourdon and thanked him for two terms of service as councillor. Councillor Sue Zacharias presented a gift to Danica Hughes and thanked her for her service during her term on Council. Councillor Ivan Bonnell presented Surinderpal Rathor with a gift and thanked him for his 21 years of service as a councillor.

Inaugural Addresses: The new Council gave their inaugural addresses, which included thanks and goals for the 2014-2018 Council term.

17) Shopping Care Safety Awareness - Dec 10th at SaveOnFoods
The Caribou Brain Injury Society will be at SaveOnFoods on Wed Dec 10th from 3 - 5pm promoting shopping cart safety awareness.
