Community Updates – May 25, 2012
1) The annual Williams Lake Children’s Festival is on Sunday May 27th in Boitanio Park from 10 am – 3 pm. Bring the whole family for sun, fun and entertainment.
2) The Williams Lake SPCA invites you to shop for or donate household items, clothing, tools, toys and furniture for their annual garage sale on May 26th in the Save on Foods parking lot from 9 am – 2 pm. Every dollar raised stays at the local shelter for animal care and treatment. Items can be dropped off at the Williams Lake Veterinary Hospital or the SPCA shelter before the day of the sale.
3) The next SPC monthly meeting is Monday May 28th from 11:30 am – 1 pm at City Hall (lunch provided). Come to discuss and develop strategies around Poverty Reduction and the Living Wage Campaign within Williams Lake.
4) At the Library on Wednesday May 30th starting at 7pm, watch the NFB film screening of “The Hole Story” and post film discussions. The Hole Story explores environmental concerns and mining operations. Check out a preview at http://www.onf-nfb.gc.ca/eng/collection/film/?id=58735
5) Kids Running for Kids Garage Sale Fundraiser is on Tuesday May 29th from 9 am – 2 pm at Mountview Elementary School. This event is raising funds for the Childrens Hospital, and you can still rent a table or donate items to the Kids table. Hot dogs, drinks, coffee and chips will also be available for sale. 6) Accessibility Awards - A reminder that Friday is the last day to submit nominations for the Williams Lake Accessibility Advisory Committee’s Accessibility Award of Merit. The committee invites the public to nominate groups or businesses that have made a significant contribution to improve accessibility within the City of Williams Lake. Awards will be announced during a Council meeting in June.
Award Nomination Guidelines:
• Businesses nominated must be located within the City of Williams Lake boundaries.
• Individuals could live outside the boundaries, but must provide a service to the citizens of Williams Lake.
• Individuals, Organizations and Businesses are eligible for nominations.
Nomination Guidelines:
• The nominee has demonstrated a commitment to increase accessibility above and beyond what is required by law or regulation.
• The nominee has improved accessibility for persons with disabilities and/or special needs.
• The business, individual or group being nominated must have provided a service for the people of Williams Lake.
• The nominator must provide strong evidence in support of the nominee’s contribution and/or commitment. Letters of support will enhance the nomination.
• Nominators can submit more than one nomination.
• Nominators cannot nominate themselves.
• Improvements or contributions should have occurred in the past two years.
• Accessibility photographs would be useful to the Selection Committee.

7) The Rivershed Society of BC is hosting its annual Rivershed Forum at Gavin Lake the first weekend in June. This Forum draws participants from throughout the Fraser River Basin. The agenda, registration form & other particulars are posted on rivershed.com. Of particular interest to local participants will be a Saturday am session which focuses on the benefits of local organizations partnering with the Rivershed Society in the hosting of a candidate for the Sustainable Living Leadership Program, an annual 3 week trip down the Fraser River where the participants develop a project to take back to their community. More info is available about the SLLP on the website.
Feel free to attend the whole Forum, or just come for the morning session & have lunch for a donation towards the food. We'd love to have your input!! If you're coming just for the morning session, please indicate that somewhere on the registration form.
8) Central Cariboo Arts & Culture Society update is available by email.
“The Social Planning Council of Williams Lake and Area (SPC) is an open forum to facilitate and share information, programs, projects, issues and connections. Our mandate is to inform, recognize, and celebrate social developments to City Council, organizations and public citizens.” Funding support is received by the City of Williams Lake and the TNC United Way.

o Monthly Meetings: Attend meetings with guest speakers from within the community &/or presentations at each meeting. We currently meet the fourth Monday of every month (excluding summer) at City Hall with light lunch by donation.
o Facebook & Email Group: Utilize the network on Facebook. Start discussions, learn about & share upcoming community events, projects and meetings. If you don’t use Facebook, then join the email network instead.
o Inform City Council: The SPC provides reports to City Council regularly and the City keeps the SPC informed. Use the network and have your voices heard.
Strategic Direction of the Social Planning Council of Williams Lake & Area:
o Poverty Reduction and the local Living Wage Campaign.
o Community Collaboration and Networking.
o Retention and Succession of residents within the Area.
Community Social Planning:
o Supports communities in building an integrated approach to complex problems that take into account social, economic, and environmental concerns.
o Maximizes the effectiveness of often scarce resources by working to reduce duplication, overlap and competition.
o Provides an ongoing forum for communication, coordination and conflict resolution.
