What is The Social Planning Council?

Activities:

o Monthly Meetings: Attend meetings with guest speakers from within the community &/or presentations at each meeting. We currently meet the fourth Monday of every month (excluding summer) at City Hall with light lunch by donation.

o Facebook & Email Group: Utilize the network on Facebook. Start discussions, learn about & share upcoming community events, projects and meetings. If you don’t use Facebook, then join the email network instead.

o Inform City Council: The SPC provides reports to City Council regularly and the City keeps the SPC informed. Use the network and have your voices heard.



Strategic Direction of the Social Planning Council of Williams Lake & Area:

o Poverty Reduction and the local Living Wage Campaign.

o Community Collaboration and Networking.

o Retention and Succession of residents within the Area.



Community Social Planning:

o Supports communities in building an integrated approach to complex problems that take into account social, economic, and environmental concerns.

o Maximizes the effectiveness of often scarce resources by working to reduce duplication, overlap and competition.

o Provides an ongoing forum for communication, coordination and conflict resolution.

7) Culture Days - Call for BC Artists & Cultural WorkersAre you an artist or cultural worker active in promoting arts & culture in your community? 8) Connect Parent Program - begins Apr 14thThere is an upcoming Connect Parent Program which will be beginning April 14, 2015 and run for 10 weeks. The Connect program is a partnership between Simon Fraser University, the Maples Adolescent Treatment Centre and MCFD. It has been developed for parents and caregivers of youth based on research examining:

Parenting and Family Functioning
Prevention and Intervention Research

9) Health & Science Career Fair - Mar 31stInviting First Nations youth in grades 7 - 12 for a Health & Science Career Fair on Tuesday Mar 31st at the Elizabeth Grouse Gymnasium on Sugar Cane Reserve from 10am - 2:30 pm. 2) International Women's Day - Celebration at TRU tonight Mar 6th
The Women's Contact Society is hosting their annual celebration of International Women's Day this evening, Mar 6th at TRU. Appetizers start at 5pm, Women with Heart Award at 5:10 pm, and Presenters start at 5:30 pm. Free admission and everyone is welcome to attend. "Paint it Purple" and "Make it Happen".

6) Immigrant & Multicultural Services Society (IMSS) - Citizenship Sessions
Friday March 20th from 12 pm - 2 pm learn about changes to Federal programs for temporary workers family reunification, spousal sponsorship and immigration applications.

IMSS also provides free monthly sessions discussing the process of applying for Canadian Citizenship, as well as preparing people to take the Citizenship test in the future. Sessions are interactive, fun, and open to all who are considering citizenship in the next two years. Next sessions are on Monday Mar 16th at 9:30am and Thursday Feb 18 Mar 19th at 6:00 pm.

All workshops are free and open to everyone regardless of immigration status. However, people with permanent resident status will be asked to provide some documentation in order that we can continue to receive funding and serve the Williams Lake community.

7) Williams Lake Wanderers - March Schedule
To join this group, come about 9:15 am to the Cariboo Memorial Complex on a Tues., Wed., or Thursday. We always begin our outings from there, so you can fill out a membership form and pay your $10 annual fee. We leave at 9:30 am. Once you're a member, you will receive emails with schedule and schedule changes. Schedules and updates are also on Facebook.

 By the middle of the month, we have scheduled only walking/hiking in anticipation of Spring!! Check your schedule daily.
