4) Housing
First Workshop Jun 18th (pre-registration is required)
with Alina Turner, PhD (University
of Calgary )
How can Housing First be
implemented in a rural context? How
could Housing First work for Williams Lake?
Housing
First is both a philosophy that emphasizes the right to a place of one’s own to
live, and is also at term used to describe a specific program model of housing
and wrap-around supports based on consumer choice. Housing First is a
recovery-oriented approach focused on quickly moving people from homelessness
into housing and then providing supports necessary to maintain it. Rather than
requiring homeless people to first resolve the challenges that contributed to
their housing instability, including addictions or mental health issues,
Housing First approaches emphasize that recovery should begin from stable
housing.
For
more on Housing First: http://www.homelesshub.ca/housingfirst
This
workshop will introduce the Housing First Model and explore how it might be implemented
in Williams Lake. We encourage participation from anyone who serves those who
are having difficulty maintaining housing, and from anyone who has a strong
commitment to addressing homelessness issues in our community.
