What is The Social Planning Council?

Activities:

o Monthly Meetings: Attend meetings with guest speakers from within the community &/or presentations at each meeting. We currently meet the fourth Monday of every month (excluding summer) at City Hall with light lunch by donation.

o Facebook & Email Group: Utilize the network on Facebook. Start discussions, learn about & share upcoming community events, projects and meetings. If you don’t use Facebook, then join the email network instead.

o Inform City Council: The SPC provides reports to City Council regularly and the City keeps the SPC informed. Use the network and have your voices heard.



Strategic Direction of the Social Planning Council of Williams Lake & Area:

o Poverty Reduction and the local Living Wage Campaign.

o Community Collaboration and Networking.

o Retention and Succession of residents within the Area.



Community Social Planning:

o Supports communities in building an integrated approach to complex problems that take into account social, economic, and environmental concerns.

o Maximizes the effectiveness of often scarce resources by working to reduce duplication, overlap and competition.

o Provides an ongoing forum for communication, coordination and conflict resolution.

1) Next Social Planning Council Meeting - Mar 24 at 11:30 am

The next monthly SPC meeting is being held at the Seniors Activity Centre from 11:30 am  - 1:00 pm (lunch by donation will be available at the Centre). There will be a presentation on the following:



Get Involved and Make a Difference - Community Action Employment Plan

(Thompson Cariboo Region)



The Community Action Employment Plan (Community Living BC initiative) is a new way for groups to collaborate to create an additional 1,200 jobs over three years for adults with developmental disabilities.



In the Thompson Cariboo Region we want to learn how we can build local capacity to increase employment, promote employers as leaders, and develop solutions that are tailored to the unique characteristics of the area.



Please join us in our second community meeting where we can work together to capture regional employment work and find ideas, actions and solutions to increase employment opportunities.



Who Should Attend: Individuals with developmental disabilities, families, community workers, service providers, employers, educators, caregivers from the Thompson Cariboo Region.



Another reminder with an agenda and last month's meeting minutes will be sent out next week. Even if you cannot stay for the entire meeting, we hope to see you there.



2) Free Mobile Legal Clinic and Information Session - Sat Mar 15th

Free Mobile Legal Clinic and Information Session - Saturday Mar 15th at IMSS (118C N. Ave (First & Borland). Workshop is from 10 am - 12 noon, and Legal Clinic is from 12:30 - 2 pm. Free coffee and refreshments will be served and transportation to the event may be provided (please call for info).



Topics to be discussed: Work permits and legal status in Canada; Recent changes to the Live-in Caregiver program; Workers legal rights; Legal and community support in cases of labour exploitation. Workshop & Clinic led by:  Ai Li Lim and WCDWA Staff Lawyer.

3) TRU Human Service Diploma -  needs a practicum student

TRU Human Service Diploma -  needs a practicum placement for one student in our Human Service Diploma.  This is a 2nd year student completing the program. The placement is a block (fulltime )placement from Mar 24th until April 30th ( approximately 5.5 weeks) .



This student is interested in working in generalist areas in human services with adult populations. This student is very interested in a placement in services with either a multicultural  or First Nations Focus

6) Subsidized Composters & Digesters - reserve yours by March 31/14

The Cariboo Regional District is selling subsidized composters again this year and have added the option of Green Cone Food Waste Digesters that will accept ALL cooked and uncooked food waste including meat, fish, bones, dairy products, vegetables and fruit! The popular Sure Close counter top containers will also be available.

10) Holding Onto Life Toolkit  - now available

The Suicide Prevention Committee has developed this toolkit for the family member of a person 15-24 years of age who is experiencing a difficult time in his/her life. When a person is in crisis, family members may have many questions. The kit is designed to provide some answers. The committee received funding through the United Way to develop this kit. 11) Performances in the Park - call for submissions reminder
Presented by the Central Cariboo Arts and Culture Society, the City of Williams Lake and the Cariboo Regional District.

The Central Cariboo Arts and Culture Society is happy to announce that Performances in the Park, the outdoor free summer concert series, will begin on Thursday, July 3rd at 6:00pm and will continue each Thursday evening at the same time at the Gwen Ringwood Theatre in Williams Lake’s Boitanio Park until August 21st. Once again, with the support of the City of Williams Lake and the Cariboo Regional District, the Central Cariboo Arts and Culture Society will be presenting this event under the management of Angela Sommer of Angelkeys Music Studio.

The concert series will feature two acts each week; one at 6pm to showcase performances including youth, theatre, dance, musical and fashion shows, followed by a headline act from 7:00 – 8:00 pm. All acts will be family friendly.

We are currently looking for performers of every type to fill these performances. Application forms can be downloaded from the Central Cariboo Arts and Culture Society’s website http://www.centralcaribooarts.com/events/performancespark.html  or you can also receive an application by emailing Angela Sommer at performances@centralcaribooarts.com
