What is The Social Planning Council?

Activities:

o Monthly Meetings: Attend meetings with guest speakers from within the community &/or presentations at each meeting. We currently meet the fourth Monday of every month (excluding summer) at City Hall with light lunch by donation.

o Facebook & Email Group: Utilize the network on Facebook. Start discussions, learn about & share upcoming community events, projects and meetings. If you don’t use Facebook, then join the email network instead.

o Inform City Council: The SPC provides reports to City Council regularly and the City keeps the SPC informed. Use the network and have your voices heard.



Strategic Direction of the Social Planning Council of Williams Lake & Area:

o Poverty Reduction and the local Living Wage Campaign.

o Community Collaboration and Networking.

o Retention and Succession of residents within the Area.



Community Social Planning:

o Supports communities in building an integrated approach to complex problems that take into account social, economic, and environmental concerns.

o Maximizes the effectiveness of often scarce resources by working to reduce duplication, overlap and competition.

o Provides an ongoing forum for communication, coordination and conflict resolution.

1) The next Social Planning Council Meeting - Monday Jan 27th  at 12pm
The next Social Planning Council meeting is on Monday January 27th from 12 - 1:30 pm at the Immigrant and Multicultural Services Society (IMSS) with a presentation about the new TRU on-campus Medical Clinic.

Membership Renewals for Social Planning Council are also now being accepted. Thank-you for your participation.

2) CTC’s Positive Action Word of the Week
The Positive Action word of the week for January 20th is: Possessions: Something you are responsible for.

The lessons focus on using positive actions to manage our gift of possessions.  Students will also explore shared possessions and our responsibility to be good stewards of our shared possessions.

3) Reminder - Recreation Complex -Free swim - Jan 18th from 6:30 - 8 pm
Sponsored by the Williams Lake Lions Club - enjoy a free swim at the complex from 6:30 - 8 pm on Saturday January 18th.

4) Christian Women's Breakfasts resume
The Williams Lake Christian Women's club is resuming monthly breakfasts. This months breakfast is on Jan 21st from 9 am -11 am at the Cariboo Bethel Church banquet room. The breakfasts are non denominational and all women are welcome to attend. Complimentary babysitting is also available on site. 5) Gallery Art Classes - Station House Gallery

7) Film Club - Cultural Awareness Saturdays
This Saturday Jan 18th the Williams Lake Film Club will be showing The Hungry Tide at the Gibralter Room beginning at  2pm (doors open at 1:30 pm) with admission of $5 (free for children under age 12).

8) Meals on Wheels - looking for volunteers
Do you have a few hours you can spare? Meals on Wheels is looking for delivery drivers 3-4 times a month. Call 250-398-8846 to inquire further.

12) Learn a Career - Lifeguarding Training - March 2014
Learn a Career! - Learning to lifeguard and teach swimming lessons is a great way to acquire part time or full time employment. All prerequisite courses are offered at the Complex. The next two to be offered are Bronze Medallion and Bronze Cross, both in March (see below)

Bronze Medallion :
This challenging course is the first step to becoming a lifeguard. It includes instruction in lifesaving skills, water rescue and first aid including CPR-C. Bronze Star or 13 years of age are the pre-requisites for this course. March 10 - 14, 12:00 - 4:00pm

Bronze Cross & CPR-C:
This program increases participants's knowledge in lifesaving and lifeguarding skills, water rescues and first aid. This course is worth two high school credits. All participants must provide a copy of a current Bronze Medallion when they register. March 17 - 21, 12:00 - 4:00pm 

13) Reminder - Potato House's Annual General Meeting - Jan 20th
It's that time of year again! The Potato House invites you to join us for our annual general meeting. Mark your calendars for Jan 20th at 5 pm at Scout Island Nature Centre (unless you have one of our Community Events Calendars already, in that case it's already marked)! Calendars are available around town including at the Cariboo Growers Farmer's Co-op and Dandelion Living.
