What is The Social Planning Council?

Activities:

o Monthly Meetings: Attend meetings with guest speakers from within the community &/or presentations at each meeting. We currently meet the fourth Monday of every month (excluding summer) at City Hall with light lunch by donation.

o Facebook & Email Group: Utilize the network on Facebook. Start discussions, learn about & share upcoming community events, projects and meetings. If you don’t use Facebook, then join the email network instead.

o Inform City Council: The SPC provides reports to City Council regularly and the City keeps the SPC informed. Use the network and have your voices heard.



Strategic Direction of the Social Planning Council of Williams Lake & Area:

o Poverty Reduction and the local Living Wage Campaign.

o Community Collaboration and Networking.

o Retention and Succession of residents within the Area.



Community Social Planning:

o Supports communities in building an integrated approach to complex problems that take into account social, economic, and environmental concerns.

o Maximizes the effectiveness of often scarce resources by working to reduce duplication, overlap and competition.

o Provides an ongoing forum for communication, coordination and conflict resolution.

1) Salvation Army’s Non-residential Recovery Program starts May 13th
The Salvation Army will be offering it’s next 8 week non-residential recovery program starting May 13th and ending July 5th. This program is open to adults aged 19 year or older who are experiencing problems related to substance misuse/abuse. To register please contact Steve Hakes at 250-305-2492

2) Seedy Saturday May 4th from 10 am – 2 pm

The 5th annual Williams Lake’s Seedy Saturday AND celebration of the Community Corner Partnerships 3rd Birthday is tomorrow. Get your local seeds and seedlings and gardening advice from local producers.  Enjoy coffee by donation to the Food Policy Council, Free Birthday Cake, live music, kids activities-including seed planting. The event is being held at the corner of 3rd and Oliver St (Cariboo Growers, Community Policing and the BIA office). For more information please contact. 3) ASPECT Targeted Skills Shortage Program – Horton Ventures in Williams Lake
Are you a small business owner? Do you work for a small business or a non-profit organizations? If your business is located within Williams Lake, has less than 100 employees and qualifies in one of the following industry sectors of Fishing and Forestry, Health Care & Social Services, Manufacturing, Mining & Natural Gas, Technology, Clean Technology, and Green Economy, or Transportation & Tourism… then ASPECT Targeted Skills Shortage Program can assist with training and upgrading skills for your employees.

Your company may qualify for up to a maximum of $1500 per employee ($7500 per employer) to assist eligible employees towards training that is specific to your workplace needs. Whether you want to increase employee motivation or skills, improve your organization’s adaptability, or reduce employee turnover. The funding is provided by Canada-British Columbia Labour Market Agreement.

4) Williams Lake Film Club’s – “An evening with Trevor Mack” – May 3rd at 7 pm

On May 3rd at 7 pm, join the Williams Lake Film Club at the Gibralter Room for an Evening with Trevor Mack. Trevor is a Tsilhqot’in who gre up on Anaham Reserve, graduated from Columneetza Secondary and went on to study at Capilano University’s motion picture arts program in Vancouver.  He has won some awards for his work, and will be at the Gibralter room in Williams Lake. There will be video showings, food, and a silent auction for some movie props, photos and autographs. Doors open at 6pm – admission is $10, $5 for kids under 12. Advance tickets are available at Red Shred’s, the Station House Gallery and Dandelion Living. There will also be tickets available at the door.

5) Library Book Sale – Apr 30 – May 4
The sale is still running until Saturday May 4th in the library program room. Great books, even better prices. Hours: Friday from 10:15-4:00pm, and Saturday 10:15-1:30pm

8) Reminders Bike Rodeo on Saturday May 4th & McFun Run on Sunday May 5th.

a) Tim Horton’s Bike Rodeo – Saturday May 4th - Join the Free community event from 11 am – 2 pm on Saturday May 4th at the Canadian Tire Parking lot. Bring your bike & helmet (if you don’t have either, call the complex). There are safety classes too and lots of fun! Contact the Rec Centre to register or for more information at 250-398-7665! Also sponsored in part by United Way’s Success by 6, Red Shreds, Canadian Tire, Youth for Christ, Cariboo Chilcotin Conservation Society, the RCMP, and the Boys & Girls Club.

b) McDonalds and KidSport present the McFun Walk/Run on Sunday May 5 with registration starting at 8:30 am at McDonalds (run starts at 9:30 am). Free Egg McMuffin for all participants. Entry fee is $5 for individual or $20 per family.

9) SPC’s next meeting – Taseko Presenting (meeting will be at the Central Cariboo Arts & Culture Society) – mark your calendars for May 27th

On Monday May 27th, Taseko Mines will be presenting for the Social Planning Council at the Central CAriboo Arts & Culture Society (Old Fire Hall next to the City). After the presentation, and discussions, we will tour the CCASC facilities. Light lunch by donation so mark your calendars – more details to follow.
